4.2 Higher Education and Advancement Opportunities
Metro Boston’s institutions of higher education create fertile, intellectual ground for new ideas and technological innovation. The graduates of these colleges and universities are the primary source for the highly skilled professionals needed in the region’s labor force.
Given the region’s increasing reliance on highly skilled professionals—in industries that include biotechnology, telecommunications, financial and professional services, higher education, and health care—the alignment of education and regional economic growth will continue to be of critical importance. Enrollment, attendance and graduation rates at institutions of higher education are indicators of the sector’s success in preparing students to thrive economically and contribute to the region’s vitality. By some estimates, more than half of the graduates of the public education system remain in Massachusetts.
