9.6 Up-to-date Technology Infrastructure in the Nonprofit Sector
The information technology revolution has created new opportunities for nonprofit organizations to improve their efficiency and respond more effectively to the needs of their constituents. Some predict that nonprofit organizations will emerge in the 21st century as information- and knowledge-based organizations—storehouses of valuable information about communities. Already, many organizations are using technology to coordinate services, access valuable information, and share ideas and knowledge.
Information technology has already had an impact on the operations of nonprofit organizations. According to the 2001 Cisco Systems study, Wired, Ready and Willing: Non-profit Human Service Organizations’ Adoption of Information Technology, 84% of human service organizations surveyed said that their daily operations have changed in the prior five years due to information technology. However, smaller organizations are less like to see technology as enhancing and time-saving enough to warrant the financial investment.
